    seriously, get a grip. sure things have gotten worse over the last 10 years, but on the whole, everything is OK.

    John Smith, you're the one who needs to get a grip.

    Checkpoints and walled ghettos in the nation's capitol IS A PROBLEM. If you don't see this, you are divorced from reality.

    Love your blog, Meissler. I'll be back regularly.

    Escape from DC?

    Daniel, I've been following your blog for a while, and I usually find it very thought-provoking and insightful.

    While I'm in agreement with you when it comes to being mindful of how things like this put us on a slippery slope to a police state, I really don't follow your logic when you say that political correctness is, at least in part, to blame for this. Can you elaborate?

    @JoseMonkey

    The reason I say PC is to blame is because PC is what constrains society from policing itself. It's what allows an underclass to wallow in ignorance that leads to poor choices, and then ultimately pain for not only themselves but everyone around them.

    PC is what endorses the giving incentives to behavior that destroys people and communities. PC is logic-free liberalism.

    An evolved society should not have large groups of people that are illiterate and violent. Yet we see the behavior that is leading to these outcomes and we do nothing to discourage it. In fact we do the opposite. Why would we give incentives for having more children? Why would we run a system that makes it more lucrative to stay home and bring more babies into a home that virtually guarantees failure?

    The reason is that it feels good to weak people. It gives the hollow impression that giving that money is helping people, when it's doing the exact opposite. That's PC. PC is the easy route.

    The hard route is the necessary one. It's telling these people who are failing that they are making poor decisions, and taking steps to REALLY help them instead of pretending to.

    That's what created this situation. Rich people, standing at a distance, throwing money at a problem in order to feel good. And now we see the consequences.

    The people in those secluded areas are OUR fault. They're OUR responsibility. What we're doing is no different than leaving children to fend for themselves and then punishing them for their actions.

    Their actions are due to a lack of guidance on our part. A failure to demand a certain standard for our society.

    But soon we'll actually see the problem that we've been trying to just throw money at. Soon it will be right in front of us and our only response will be to throw them in jail.

    That's the irony: we have to build prisons to house the people we were too cowardly to demand and facilitate better behavior from. It's a failure on our part, not theirs. This is the expected outcome. This is what happens when you reward failure with incentives. And the whole system is built on PC.

    Does that answer your question?
