I too have to know how to pronounce things. Most people I communicate with don't know computers anyway, I am usually working on theirs and yet I still feel compelled to say things correctly! I was very happy to find out here though that I have been pronouncing it correctly all along! Thanks, I appreciate the info.
I myself thought it looked exactly like it sounds.
I had an ex that used to say (when chopping up the English language) "Well, I knew what I meant!" I couldn't get it across to her that the whole point of communication was for the other person to know what you meant! I think a lot of people just don't care.
I don't want to talk like an English professor, but I don't want to sound ignorant either.

I'm a bit of a grammar nazi, but I'm most certainly not a pronunciation nazi. I believe that, when it comes to pronunciation, it is far more important to be understood. If everyone I interact with pronounces something a particular way, even if it's wrong, if I pronounce it a different way, even if it's the correct way, it is simply a barrier to effective communication. They may not know what you are talking about - adopting their pronunciation rules does not have this problem.

THANK YOU. I'm new to Linux, but I boast about switching from Windows to all my friends. It suddenly struck me, with great mortification, that I may be pronouncing "Ubuntu" wrong. I was much gratified to see that I've been pronouncing it correctly all along.
